In good news for the Peyton Manning watch, rookie TE Tom Santi has been declared ready to practice. He is supposed to be about two weeks ahead of Peyton, which would put Manning on pace to begin practice the week leading up to the Bears game. I think we all know that's not quite ideal, but it makes it really nice that we get to face Kyle Orton in week one.
As I sit here and watch Argentina/Brazil in the Olympic semi-finals, allow me to make just one small suggestion to the brass at NBC...DON'T CUT TO COMMERCIAL JUST BEFORE A CORNER KICK. I had to switch off to Telemundo to watch Riquelme send one into the box. That's just embarrassing. It's bad enough they didn't pay to have announcers actually be AT the game, but to cut away for commercials twice a half...it's really bush league broadcasting.

Good news about Santi. It's not ideal, but I think the week before the game is enough time for Peyton to face the Bears. They're not much of threat.
After the first half of the ARG x BRA game, I have to agree with you about Messi. He's killing Brazil, but they just can't find the net. He's trully showcasing his dominance.

2 x 0 now. Brazil seems to be asleep. The thing about Argentines is, no matter what the game is about, every time they dress up the national team jersey, they play their hearts out. The same does not happen with the Brazilian players. And the first goal, it was more chest than hand, don't you think?

You're totally right about the pride of playing for the celeste and blanco. Think about Messi. His club actively doesn't want him to play, and basically defied them. Then, instead of playing safe or acting like he doesn't want to get hurt, he goes out plays his ass off.
The seleccion is EVERYTHING in Argentina, and any time they play, be it U20, Olympics, or the Mundial, it's a national event.
I know. Used to be like that in other places too. But now that the players are superstars, they only care about their money, with a few exceptions.
I think that Maradona's presence really helps that. Imagine what USA Basketball would be like if Michael Jordan treated it like it was the true test of a player.
Messi and Aguero are dominating this game.

Though his presence might help, I don't think it's decisive like it would be on the US basketball example you mentioned. Aguero is playing really well indeed. This one is history, now. Riquelme, aside from the penalty kick he just converted, is playing below expectations.
I asked a several grade school classes who the most important person in the history of Argentina was (this was on San Martin day!) and literally every kid in every class said:
MARADONA!
I think his presence keeps the players from 'drifting'. It would still be important to wear the stripes if he wasn't around, but it keeps the heat on the younger pros to not be content with their million dollar salaries and to take it easy when they aren't with the clubs.

I don't think it's hilarious, I think it's a shame for the international soccer that more and more often players give no importance to their national teams.
I didn't mean that it's hilarious that they are imploding in general, just that it was hilarious that imploded today.
In the long run, you're right. They players have to care about international results or it'll mean trouble for the game.
Exactly. I misread you, then. I agree, players don't need to have greater motivation than simply playing for their country, especially against a big rival. In the past, until the 90s it used to be like that.
