Live Game Blog

Getting ready for kick off. Mark Herrmann thinks Jeff Saturday is the second most important player on the offense. Interesting argument, but I'd stick with either Reggie Wayne or Ugoh because of the importance of protecting Manning's blind side.

1st Quarter

1.) Former North Central standout Courtney Roby gets things going with a nice return out to the 45 yard line. Huge for him, obviously. Two unsuccessful carries by Kenton Keith. Probably a last ditch effort for him to make the team. I'm doubting it, but what do I know? Punt.

2.) Ryan Fitzpatrick opens it up by overthrowing his man. Scrambles on third for exactly ten yards. DZ calls to inform me that the building is only 60% full. Can't honestly blame the ticketholders. He almost talked our dad into going to the game, but someone reminded Dad that no one of significance would be playing for either team. I've spent most of this drive eating a corndog. Crazy long drive. Going on ten minutes. Mostly crazy scrambles by the QB. Down to the five yard line. Charleston whiffs badly on the Fitzpatrick. Somebody hit this clown. Terrible Jeff Saturday commercial for the millionth time. Touchdown Chris Perry. Bengals 7 - Colts 0.

3.) The home fans seem to be headed for another preseason treat. Garcon's return only gets to the 17. Interesting. Gray misses badly on his first attempt of the drive. Keith gets stuffed. Sack. Fumble. Bengals ball.

Second Quarter

1.) Touchdown Cincy. Bengals 14 - Colts 0

2.) This maybe an abridged live blog for two reasons. First, this is a terrible game. Second, my son keeps turning off the cable box. Roby out to the 21. Not much blocking to work with.

3.) Big gainer to Santi. 22 yards from Lorenzen. Gray has no business making this team. Neither does Lorenzen. Punt.

4.) The Terre Haute Colts don't looks so good tonight. Huuuge sack by Josh Thomas forces a punt.

5.) Courtney Roby takes the kickoff 104 yards for a score! Rosterize him. That's as clutch as it gets when you are fighting for your career. Bengals 17 - Colts 7

Can I has Chris Simms?

Roby's got the KR job now.

What did I say!? Roby's the man!

Lorenzen is our leading rusher with 9 yards. That can't be good...

Roby only makes the roster if they cut both Gray and Lorenzen. I don't think they'll keep a guy JUST for returning kickoffs. Roby certainly made it a tough choice though.

I don't have a doubt that he makes the team. He's proven that he can return kicks. If we need him JUST for that reason, we should keep him JUST for that reason. It's one of the only weaknesses we've had. If he's as good as he looks, we'd be dumb not to keep him. He also has veteran status, which will make things easier on the coaching staff. Garcon? He won't make it. He didn't have a reception in this last game and only had 1 return. Just my opinion.

The rumor has been that Garcon is a favorite of the coaches. They think he's very raw but talented. Phil B had him ranked as the 4 reciever ahead of Roy Hall who will make the team as a special teams gunner.

Preseason production is only a small part of the picture.

Well, maybe they keep both of them. We had Rushing last year as a KR/PR and he didn't get in many games as a DB, so what's the difference if it's an extra WR instead? I don't think they'll keep more than 2 QBs anyway. It could be Garcon-Hall and 4 and 5 and then Roby as specialist. How many more points would we score with a valid KR? He has to make it.

I agree in theory, but if you have to hold roster spots for Sorgi and Saturday AS WELL as an extra player for each if they are too hurt to play, it may be a luxury you can't afford. Special teams really is an overrated part of the game. The Colts have been dreadful in special teams the last several years, and while it has cost them some points, it has cost them maybe one game (San Diego regular season).

Sorry to keep fighting you, lol. Sorgi's knee is fine, they say the swelling is going down. As far as the Saturday thing, we probably aren't going to add any more lineman than we would have anyway. Whoever steps in for him would have been on the roster as a backup guard, so there really isn't a roster spot in question there. If he has surgery, then you're talking IR, and then Roby definitely has a spot. I agree special teams is overrated, but when you have the opportunity to upgrade something, you do it.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present the ONLY NFL team with two #1 draft choices at QB: Peyton Manning and the man with Nuke LaLoushe syndrome (million dollar arm, ten cent head), Jeff George!

Oh, and I had lunch with a business associate today who had lunch with Steve Emtman earlier this week. I didn't realize SE was canned as the UW strength coach and is now coaching an arena league team in Spokane WA. I remember when he was to be our savior, and for a few games, he looked up to the task. I think the Huskies allowed an average of 10 yards rushing per game his senior year.

Oops, make that 9.2 PPG and 67 yards rushing. Still pretty studly, but not quite as good as 10 YPG on the ground.
