Randy Moss: Sucker

Randy Moss signed a shockingly small contract with the New England Patriots. He's taking $27 million dollars over three years, with guarantees of $15M.

What?

It took Jerry Porter EIGHT SEASONS to score 30 CAREER touchdowns and he got $10M guaranteed from the Jags.

What?

Randy Moss had 23 touchdowns last year. 23.

Marvin Harrison got $23M guaranteed four years ago. And the salary cap has gone up dramatically since then.

What?

Adalius "bust" Thomas got the same $12M signing bonus last year, with $22M front loaded over the first two years of his deal.

Am I missing something here?

The contract is only 3 years long, so that is in Moss's favor. But realistically this is it for him. He's given up his last best chance to cash in. And frankly it all makes me sick. Remember, we're not talking about Matt Jones here. This is a guy who changes everything for your team (provided your quarterback isn't Andrew Walter). This guy caught 17 TDs his rookie year, giving Randall Cunningham his best year with 34 TDs against 10 picks. This guy made Daunte Culpepper look like an All Pro. This guy took Tom Brady, who had never thrown 30 touchdowns in a season, all the way to 50 touchdowns.

I probably need to let this go. I better go watch the Super Bowl again.

Update: Check out this hilarious piece from John Clayton. I love how Clayton thinks the fact that Moss got more than Jerry Porter was some kind of moral victory for Randy. And he almost got as much as Bernard Berrian! Take that New England! I guess "the professor" has been in the medicine cabinet again. But seriously, you have to admire Bill Belichick asking Moss to play for $7 million per season. He may be a megalomaniacal jerk, but he's a gutsy megalomaniacal jerk.

Go watch the superbowl again, I'm gonna watch the Colts-Chargers game.

Randy Moss may have taken less money, but at least he's not ashy.

The World Champion Boston Red Sox are right around the corner....and maybe the Green get one too.

That would feel nice headed into mini-camps.

Just don't do it.

Moss took less because he wants to play for the Patriots and have the NFL's greatest quarterback throw to him. What's so hard to understand?

Deshawn Zombie said...

it's kind of hard to play for the Pats AND Peyton Manning at the same time.

Though you failed to mention that throwing to Moss got Culpepper close enough for an MVP in a normal year back in 2004 (i.e. a year that was not 04 or 07). Think about it, throwing to Moss made Culpepper just about the 2nd best QB in all of football.

It's done the same thing for Brady.

BREAKING NEWS: Brett Favre is to be retiring.

HeatherRadish said...

Yeah. The sky in Milwaukee is green with the bodies of people throwing themselves off ledges...I'm hoping this depresses the secondary market for Lambeau tix so I can watch Aaron Rodgers meet DFree :-D

Interestingly, people 'round here are reading the timing of Favre's retirement after the Moss deal as an indicator that Favre wanted the Pack to sign him as a condition of his not retiring (you'll recall he had a bit of a public tantrum about the Pack front office not considering Moss last year). If true, I lose all respect for the man. Even crying over Make-A-Wish kids can't offset that much pathetic.

Bob M. said...

Who is this Favre person and why is everyone so upset?

Anonymous said...

I, for one, am glad that the first anonymous Pats fan/front runner has reappeared on this sight. I thought all of them had ODed like jc.

And you know, I meant site, not sight....long day, I guess the Favre retirement took more out of me than I thought!

Zac:

As much as you'd wish me dead....my Heath Ledger cocktail couldn't fade me like Snoop.

So with that said....who's the #1 seed next year?

We have, literally, the statistically softest schedule in the NFL next year. I'm not sure which divisions you guys are playing and I think we all agree that San Diego are frauds.

I pencil us in for 12-4 but 14-2 is realistically not out of reach.

Your thoughts?

Anonymous said...

I don't wish you dead...I want you to turn from your evil, Pat loving ways and come back to the light.

And I would say the #1 seed will come down between you guys and us. As usual.

Bob M. said...

Agreed, though SD, frauds or not, has a very easy schedule (as measured by 2007 winning percentages) as well. Rivers seemed to "get it" in the second half this year; they may well be the third wheel.

In light of the last 3 SB winners, I'm a little less enamored of having a 1st round bye, anyway. Heresy, I know, especially when a team is dinged up or worse. And who isn't after 17 weeks?

Based on the results of 2007, the Pats have one of, if not the, easiest schedule in football.

Realistically, I see the Chargers getting the #1 seed (because the Raiders, Chiefs, and Broncos will be terrible), the Pats the #2 seed (because everyone they play besides the Colts and Chargers sucks), and the Colts the #3 seed, with the Browns at #4 (yes, I'm predicting the Browns will win the division; someone remind me of this around week five when the Browns are 2-3 and Derek Anderson just got yanked in favor of Brady Quinn, who promptly threw an interception on his first NFL pass, or fumbled the handoff to Jamal Lewis who broke his hip midstride.) The Jags should take the #5 seed, and I'll give the Texans, Jets, or Steelers the #6. The wild cards pray to lineup on the Pats/Browns side of the coin, and the Colts and Bolts duke it out. New England continues it's slide into obscurity, and people have to start saying "Yeah, they won three Super Bowls in four years, but they did it four years ago."

And honestly, I feel bad for Aaron Rogers. He's got to be sitting in his house going "Are you kidding me?!? I was getting paid top-10 draft pick money to hold a clipboard for three years, and now I have to replace Brett freaking Favre? What the hell, man?"

In other news, I wouldn't count on Boston winning any more championships. The Celtics are going to get blasted by whoever wins the West, assuming Cleveland doesn't do the job first. Garnett has this habit of disappearing during the playoffs. And the Red Sox will have to beat the Mets for the World Series. Apparently you forgot that Johan Santana is pitching in Queens. Cubs and Reds fans read that and just started drinking heavily.

Anonymous said...

Yea but my dog is cooler than you are you anonymous bitch.

And the Sox beat two guys better than Johan last year three times in the ALCS.

Willie Randolph. Smooth kid. Smooth.

Anonymous said...

jc-you say a lot of crazy things, but that last one was the worst. And this one is without any hint of Colts homerism.

There is NOBODY better than Santana. You take them all, I will take Santana and have the best guy.

Anonymous said...

Fine have him.

And John Maine.

And Pedro after Kathy Bates from the new DirecTV commercial just broke his shoulder with a sludge hammer.

Roll that out against Beckett, Dice-K, Bucholz, and Lester plus the sickest 1-9 in recent Sox memory and we'll 4 game their asses.

Anonymous said...

Ya gotta get there first. And as far as the best 1-9 ever in Boston history, you guys are pretty much returning the same squad from last year, with Manny one year closer to his breakdown. You guys are also going to rely heavily on Bucholz and Lester to get starter innings for you, a burden they have never carried

And by the way, your Red Sox scored more runs in 2003, 04, and 05 than your 2007 squad, the team that is one year older and still intact. Seems to me that your offense is actually in decline.

But don't let facts and evidence get in the way of your confidence...haven't you learned the lesson from Superbowl 42?

Anonymous said...

As a Cubs fan, I drink heavily all season ("Old Style! Get your ice-cold Old Style!"). I just don't get bummed out until after the All-Star break. We Cubs fans have a saying: "There's always next year!"

And we're usually saying it before the weather gets hot.

Anonymous said...

I won't hold the Cubs fanship against you, even if I am a Cardinals fan. You guys might be tough this year...although the collapse, like you said, is always a distinct possibility.

I want in my heart to pick the Cardinals to win the division, but my head is actually saying go with the Reds. That is, as long as Dusty Baker doesn't screw the pooch.

Anonymous said...

Ellsbury and Pedroia.

How's that for facts?

Rookie of the year and a stud baby-faced leadoff hitter who singlehandedly (other than Beckett) won the ALCS after he replaced Coco. Not to mention Mike Lowell coming off the sickest year ever.

Do your homework Zac. I expect more from you than say.....DZ or Demond who just throw rage-filled rants up without seeing the numbers first.

And go look at Carmona and Sabathia last year vs. Johan. Pretty comparable.

Anonymous said...

I love getting called out.

I will give you Pedroria, that dude deserves the accolades and certainly deserved the ROY. He was in the lineup last year obviously, a lineup which did score the fewest runs for a Red Sox team since around 2003.

As for Ellsbury, by all means count his postseason as an indicator for things to come. He has 116 MLB at bats, and I've got news for you..he isn't hitting .353 this year....he will be fortunate for that to be his OBP, much like it was in AAA. He will play good defense and not suck offensively. Awesome!

Mike Lowell...that contract he got in the offseason was just inexplicable. Call me crazy, but all of the career years your guys have late in their careers scream PEDs. Schilling, Ortiz, Veritek, Lowell, Trot Nixon, Keith Foulke, Kevin Millar, Bill Mueller, Damon... dripping with steroids man. Even Tony la Russa thinks your clubhouse has too much juice. And don't forget, the entire 2004 squad had herpes!

And I've got news for you, even if D-Pee and Ellsbury hit their highest ceiling in your wettest Red Sox dream....they cannot replace a declining Manny and Ortiz. Manny put up his lowest OPS+ since 1994. Ortiz is still a monster, but how much longer can he last, even as a DH? Those knees will really start creaking eventually, and the slide will begin. Will you be ready?

As for Carmona and C.C., the operable word you used is "comparable." As in, similar, but not the same, and in this case, not nearly the same. Call me in four years if both of those guys are doing the same thing Johan has been doing since 2004. One good year certainly doesn't make you better than a guy who has been doing it for really five years now and is still in his prime.

Just look at the career numbers and try and make the case the Indians twosome is even in the same hemisphere as Santana...its just not there. Dude got outpitched by 20+ innings last year by C.C. and he still took him to town in Ks. And the Carmona comp...well that is just insulting. Let's see Carmona do this over two seasons before we compare him to Johan. Just not fair to the kid.

But as much as I bluster...you guys look set up for this year. You don't have as much depth as you think, especially in the rotation, but its should be enough to take down the Yanks again, unless their young pitchers go insane. If you stay healthy, you will be right there in October, as always. Stay healthy, get some breaks, and you might repeat, to the disgust of us all.

Wait, I thought Pats fans hate to look at stats! Don't you all just favor "clutchess" "ability to just win games" and "great asses"? Don't start slinging stones about stat quoting until you pry the shards of crystal out of your butts. You want a stat? 18-1. How's that for a stat?
wait, what are we talking about again? Oh yeah, baseball. Wait, wasn't this post about randy f moss?

HeatherRadish said...

There's speculation Favre may not be completely retiring.

The F-Pats are always looking for old guys who want a ring. And they have Randy Moss.

I've been disappointed by the lack of riots across the upper Midwest this week, but I think that would do it. *grin*

Let's not forget the Iceman at the back end of the bullpen.

The Cordero signing will be the one to make Or break this reds team. The bullpen has kept an otherwise solid team out of contention. I wish I felt better about it

Just don't draft Reds or your team will totally suck.

Unless it's Griffy Jr. for 1 buck.

Anonymous said...

I have Joey Votto and Homer Bailey on my keeper league squad for a buck. I have high hopes in the future.

I saw Votto play here in Indy at the last series of the AAA season....that dude is the real deal. He will hit and he also has a little bit of speed. It wouldn't surprise me to see him get to 10+ steals this year.

Bob M. said...

zac,I respectfully request that you bite me.
I'll keep my Pirate and Yankee fandom quiet (hey, if you combine the teams over the past 15 years, they're exactly average!) and wait for some football news.

Anonymous said...

I think I just reached a new low in my life. In a thread seriously populated by jc.....I was the one who was respectfully asked to bite someone. Do I get a certificate?

I like football and all, but baseball is my true sports passion. Any discussion about baseball will have me incredibly interested, especially in this moment right before the season.

Deshawn Zombie said...

then this is the place for you. I'm a serious baseball first guy. Every year for work I have to list my nonwork related life goals for the year. Winning my fantasy league always makes my list

I'm embarrassed for myself

Bob M. said...

Okay, Zac, I'll bite myself, but just this once. (Actually, my 3 year-old will be glad to lend a jaw)
Back in the mid late 80's when I got my first job after college at a magazine, the managing editor (Steve) confided in me that he got the job because his former boss (Paul) was slacking off by spending more time running his rotiss baseball league than actually working.
So what did Steve promptly do when he got the job? (Remember this is the quaint 80's) Had the company install a second line into his office and provide him with a dedicated answering machine to help him manage the same rotiss league. I started work and the first day he asked me: Do you like baseball? with the same fervor as the pilot in the movie Airplane! asking about Turkish prisons. My response: "Sort of. I like the Pirates." In the last two decades, there were about three years when that was not a punchline. Ouch.
