Write 'em up

Here's a list of links and grades:

Start with Phil B's breakdown of day two. Nice work again Phil.

Then head over to Colts.com to listen to the Polian/Dungy press conference.

Marcus Howard makes SI's list of steals.

This writer says the Colts owned draft day in the AFC South.

The Czar gives the Colts a C. Hee hee. Silly Czar. You have no idea who you are dealing with.

Prisco doesn't grade the round 2 pick, but manages to be slightly homo-erotic.

Long but fun, FO chimes in.

Mel Kiper Jr says....B

NBC says the just a tad higher (thanks Jacob)

Prisco says B- for no real reason.

Clark Judge says Mike Hart was a winner this weekend.

EVERYONE STAND BACK! Kravitz is attempting to analyze! His brain might just explode!

Dr. Z's comments are lackadaisical and cryptic.

Yahoo Sports gives us a B

Demond Sanders: Here is a must-read from the Sporting News. Hilarious. The guys on XL 950 decided that the Colts should get credit for Tony Ugoh since it was essentially their first round pick. I tend to agree.

One of the top things to take away from this weekend is that the Colts have their own agenda and plan when it comes to the draft. They take their kind of players when and where they see fit. Hopefully most of these guys make the club. If the Horse pulls out a starter, some special teams guys, and some solid backups out of this class, then it was a success.

The Jags are mostly getting hammered, and the Pats have too in some of those same circles. Here's the thing about the Pats: they don't actually draft that well. They have a great front office and the end result is great teams, but as we've discussed before, the draft (other than the Brady pick) hasn't really been their strongest suit. They excel in a combination of areas, especially free agency. I see no reason to assume that they had a good draft just because they are the Pats. They haven't earned that courtesy based upon their draft track record.

Also, the pundits that liked the Jacksonville moves all focus in (rightly) on the Jags trying to sack Manning. It's hilarious that at a time when the Jags go all out for D-line picks, that the Colts quietly restock the entire offensive line. Oh Jacksonville, I almost feel sorry for you. They'll be lucky to go 9-7 next year.

One neat aspect of the SI Steals column: 3 Patriot draft choices were listed as "Reaches." I'll give guys like Polian and Pioli the benefit of the doubt... but three? And one is a developmental QB where there is little clear need...? Okay, whatever.

And their CB choice "got burned all the time"? Really? Maybe they watched different film. I have problems believeing the Pats' draft is all that bad, but it's interesting to hear it criticized. As we all know NOBODY criticizes the smarts of the NE front office. (and lives to have the last laugh).

NBC seems to get it more head on: Colts get a B+, jax gets a C-

Did Mike Hart really go 1,005 carries between fumbles as indicated in the linked article? Led Big-10 in rushing? 5,000 career yards? This is not D-3 competition he had... Catches passes and blocks? And he went in the freakin' sixth round?

I won't really know what to say until I see him, but I am pretty psyched at the prospect of Addai resting a bit more and there being no dropoff ala 2006. If RB#2 can consistently take 10 carries and 40 yards a game, plus fill in for the inevitable injury game, I'll be pretty darn happy.

It's a great pick. If he sucks, no big deal, but I have a feeling he might end up being huge.

If Mike Hart were 3 inches taller, he might have been a first round pick.

Then again, Marcus Howard ran the fastes 40 for DEs at the combines and was a 5th rounder.

Best news? No more draft BS until next Feburary. Yay!

Dammit. This means no football until training camp. Then we can start Keithwatch 2008.

Amen to no more draft crap for another 11 months. Can't say I'll miss it.

From Peter "I Never Met A Gunslinging QB I Didn't Want To Immediately Fellate" King -

5. Jacksonville. I christen this draft the "We Are Desperate To Sack Peyton Manning and Will Sell Our Souls to Do So Draft." The Jags started the weekend with six picks in the top 150 of the draft. They exited the weekend with two players, and both are former SEC defensive ends -- Derrick Harvey of Florida and Quentin Groves of Auburn, picked at eight and 52, respectively. If you're going to pay for quality, you can't be afraid, and Jag GM James Harris was not on Saturday.

Give it five years. People will be quoting this and then say "And this is why the Jaguars moved to Los Angeles."

points #2 & 3 lead me to ask: who is the guy that wrote this nonsense?

Ha! You found him! That was one of the guys I was referring to in the last paragraph of the post. So, so, unfortunate that this guy got a job without having to pay attention to football.

At least he has the respect to call him Mister Manning....

The agent for Lito Sheppard has reportedly had "extensive conversations" with the Jaguars about a potential trade for his client.
The rumored deal would send the Eagles a "package of picks" in 2009. Andy Reid wants to speak with Lito about his contract, so it's doubtful a trade is imminent. It wouldn't be a bad idea for the Birds to hang on one more year.

this made me lol hard. if they go above a third+fifth (which still would produce a chuckle), del rio and co are going to find themselves in the over-spending/reaching depths. i can't remember a time in the modern era where a team spent so much in picks and became competitve until they returned to the draft as the root of their franchise.

last year's patriots team being a slight difference as they (somehow) gave up squat for what they aquired.

I've seen comments here and there that the Jags are trying to win now while at the same time drafting Florida players so as to fire up the fan base so as to quiet the LA rumors. There is a lot of pressure from the leauge for them to move to LA, but I'm not sure the owner really wants to go. It seems like the Jags are trying to shoot for the moon so as to 'save' the franchise for North Florida.

Or they just suck at their jobs. Either way, the results are hi-larious.

The Raiders should have filed charges against the Patriots after last season, because Randy Moss for a 4th round pick was grand theft wide receiver. That's the kind of thing that happens once every ten years. The Pats are the only team in the league I could see getting away with it.

As a note, how many linemen do we have on the team? Saturday, Ugoh, Lilja, Diem, Johnson, Toudouze, and the three rookies. The Colts could conceivably run a play where they bring in offensive linemen for every position except running back and QB.

You forgot Dylan Gandy. Though the good Chappell article in the Star this morning posits that he might be the odd man out.
